Georgia’s First Indoor Football League Team to Be Announced at May 21 Celebration in Athens
ATHENS, Ga. (April 30, 2026) – A major new chapter in Georgia sports is coming to Athens as Akins Ford Arena hosts a public kickoff celebration and press conference on Thursday, May 21, officially announcing Georgia’s first team in the Indoor Football League (IFL).
The event will introduce the new Athens-based expansion franchise, which is set to begin play in March 2027 with a season running through July.
The event will feature appearances from team owners Jerome Bettis, Brian Jordan and David Pollack, along with special guest Mark Richt.
Bettis is a Pro Football Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion widely regarded as one of the NFL’s all-time great running backs. Jordan built a standout career as one of the nation’s most notable two-sport professional athletes, playing in both the NFL and Major League Baseball. Pollack remains one of the most decorated defensive players in University of Georgia football history and later became a nationally recognized broadcaster. Richt led Georgia football for 15 seasons, winning two SEC championships and becoming one of the most respected coaches in college football.
“Athens is one of the great football communities in America, and it deserves more than just a season – it deserves a year-round connection to the game,” said Bettis. “We’re building something that’s not just about wins and losses, but about pride, energy, and giving this city a team it can truly call its own.”
Media are encouraged to attend and cover the event. One-on-one interview opportunities with team owners Bettis, Jordan and Pollack will be available immediately following the program.
Additional remarks are expected from Paul Cramer, president and CEO of The Classic Center Authority, Kelly Girtz, mayor of Athens-Clarke County, and community partners.
Open to the public, the celebration will feature live music, street performances, food and beverage offerings, fan experiences and a first look at what Indoor Football will bring to Athens. Community members will also have an opportunity to weigh in on the future team name, giving locals an early role in shaping the franchise.
